What is a Type 2 Surge Protection Device?

Type 2 Surge protection device: Type 2 SPD, Class 2 SPD, Class C SPD, or Class II SPD, is typically installed downstream from type 1 or at distribution panels. It offers protection against residual surges and lower-energy transients, working in combination with the type 1 surge protective devices.
Type 2 Surge Protection Device Waveform
8/20 µs Waveform (Type 2 SPDs): This waveform exhibits a rapid rise time of 8 microseconds and a relatively extended duration of 20 microseconds. It is a standard for defining the ratings of type 2 surge protection devices.
The devices are engineered to protect against fast-rising, high-current surges that may arise from activities like switching operations or nearby lightning strikes.
The waveform effectively replicates the swift increase in voltage associated with these events, guiding the design and performance expectations of type 2 surge protection devices.

How does a Type 2 Surge Protection Device Work?

Sensing the Surge: When a surge occurs, the voltage in the system rises above the normal operating level. The Type 2 arrester is connected parallel to the electrical system, constantly monitoring the voltage.

Redirecting Excess Energy: Once the type 2 SPD detects that the voltage has exceeded a predefined threshold (the clamping voltage), it activates and quickly diverts the excess energy to the ground, preventing it from reaching connected devices.

Suppressing the Voltage Spike: The type 2 SPD reduces the magnitude of the overvoltage by limiting it to a safe level for the electrical installation and equipment.

Resting State: After redirecting the surge energy, the type 2 SPD returns to its normal state and continues monitoring for any future surges. It doesn’t interrupt the power supply during normal operation, allowing the system to function as usual.

Best Type 2 Surge Protection Device

It is not easy to be the best Type 2 Surge Protector, as a professional Surge Protector SPD manufacturer, we analyze from the following 4 points why to choose LSP’s Type 2 Surge Protector SPD.

1. Nominal Discharge Current In (8/20 μs)
Thanks to select high-quality components and parts used for Type 2 Surge Protector SPD, making the SLP40 series the best Type 2 Surge Protector SPD.

L pole:

  • Adapting LKD brand Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)
  • High discharge capacity due to heavy-duty zinc oxide varistor, In (8/20 μs) up to 20kA

NPE pole:

  • Adopting high-energy Gas Discharge Tube (GDT)
  • High-energy GDT connected directly with metal screw, ensure faster discharge of lightning surge current
  • In (8/20 μs) up to 20kA
2. Residual Voltage Level (Up)
Residual voltage is the peak voltage allowed by a surge protector during normal operation. The lower the residual voltage, the better the protection effect.
The residual voltage level of Type 2 Surge Protector SPD is usually higher, but thanks to prime heavy-duty zinc oxide varistor / GDT combination, SLP40 series maintain a lower residual voltage level (U(p) < 1.5kV) under high current conditions.
3. Response Time
The SPD should be able to respond within nanoseconds, eliminating transient overvoltages as quickly as possible.
  • Thanks to premium MOV, response time of L pole less than 25ns.
  • Thanks to superior performance GDT, response time of NPE pole less than 100ns.
4. Certificate
Undergone rigorous testing according to IEC/EN 61643-11 by TUV Rheinland laboratories and LSP obtained CB, TUV mark and CE certification. This proves that SLP40 series are the best Type 2 Surge Protector SPD.
