RS485 Surge Protection Device

SPD for Signal Data Telecom RS485 RS422 RS232 - FRD2-xxx series

Modular & Compact SPD for Single Pair Line – FRD2 series for 5V 12V 24V 48V 150V DC

These efficient overvoltage barriers contain both coarse and fine protection stages and provide longitudinal and a transverse surge protection.

The initial protection stage comprises a three-pole gas discharge tube and is designed to divert the primary surge energy. The subsequent fine protection stage is carried out using fast bi-directional silicon avalanche diodes. Care is taken in the design of this fine protection stage to avoid capacitive line loading and thereby ensuring a low insertion loss and wide operating frequency range.

Series line impedances ensure energy coordination between the coarse and a fine protection stages at all levels of the incident surge. To protect against the hazards of electric shock and fire which often results when power frequency contact occurs between power and communication lines, often called mains incursion, a thermo-clip is included on the primary protection stage to divert the power frequency current to ground.

The plug-in module/base design facilitates replacement of a failed module without the need to remove system wiring. If the module is unplugged out of the base, the connection lines remain enabled.

Modular & Compact SPD for Two Pair Line – FRD4 series for 5V 12V 24V 48V 150V DC

Like the FRD2 Series, the FRD4 provides the same level of protection to two independent circuit pairs. A number of protection voltages are available to ensure the user is able to select the closest clamping voltage to the normal signal operation of the equipment being protected.

The plug-in module/base design facilitates replacement of a failed module without the need to remove system wiring. If the module is unplugged out of the base, the connection lines remain enabled.

Signal & Data Surge Protection

SPD for Signal Data Telecom RS485 RS422 RS232

Power surges occur when there is a sudden increase of voltage sent through a power system from an internal or external force.

Such forces can be caused by lightning strikes, electrical overload, faulty wiring or utility switching.

Surge protection devices provide a line of defense against power surges preventing irreparable damage to equipment and costly downtime.

Communication or signal lines that enter or exit a building are at the highest risk of power surge transients being induced onto the interconnecting signal lines. Surge protection devices should be installed at the point-of-entry or at the equipment termination itself.

They must be designed to clamp the excess transient voltage to safe levels sustainable by the equipment while at the same time, not interfere with the normal signaling voltages. To accomplish this, the protective circuits usually combine fast-responding, low-capacitive suppressor diodes with gas discharge tubes.

Gas discharge tubes dissipate voltage transients through a contained gas. They have high insulation resistance plus low capacitance and leakage, to ensure minimal effect on normal operation of equipment.

The line current rating of the surge protection device needs to be sufficient to handle the maximum expected signaling current and the bandwidth must be sufficient to allow correct operation of the system without adverse attenuation.

The final choice of surge protection device will then be determined by the type of physical connection, the number of lines to be protected and the surge rating.
